Daaaamn…I was really flabbergasted after seeing this movie for the first time. It’s such a visual fest of cinematic techniques combined with thought-provoking storylines and strange, dark humor. This Hungarian flick from the beginning of this century really slams into you like a hammer.
The movie focuses on a generation of three men, all with their own unique issues. In three sections their life stories are told. One man is driven by perversion, the other a professional speed eater, and finally, a man who dedicated his life to embalming animals. How are these men linked together? That’s for the viewer to decide. We get a very intimate look into the lives of these men, but also into the history and society of Hungary.
This movie is not very delicate in showing the level of sadness and sometimes banality of these men, but it does it with a dark, dry sense of humor, which I have noticed in more Hungarian films and other “East-block” movies. Maybe the effect of communism?
Finally, the climax is something that will be imprinted in your mind for a long time; a scene of extreme insanity and absurdism which is hard to describe and needs to be experienced! So I recommend you to accept the challenge and let yourself be baffled.
