About the me
So we're back in the New Year and this time we will delve into the Carpathian Mountains of Transylvania, bringing you a film from the Romanian New Wave.
Romanian cinema hasn't produced too much under communism, unlike their socialist brothers in Czech, Hungary and Poland, but they started to bloom around the 2000's with some amazing films that show the hardship of the Romanian people after the fall of communism and the quick and harsh overtake of capitalism.
Although grim and realistic, this movie is a (black) comedy that shows all the realities and horrors of post-communism in Romania, with that particular cynical sense of humor that especially East European cinema is known for and I personally love!
To give a short preview of the story without giving too much away: the main character of the film is an underpaid middleaged teacher (aren't they all) that lives with his parents and has big dreams, although they mainly seem to involve having lots of money and beautiful women. One day the beautiful sister of one of his delinquent students comes to his school and he becomes obsessed with her. But how to entertain a beautiful woman like this with obviously high standards of living? That brings our hero into a conundrum with far reaching consequences...
So, come and join us this night for a bitter symphony of Transylvanian laughter uhahaha
